Latex mattresses, made by our family one a day

Some people sell natural mattresses. Others sell organic mattresses. We make latex mattresses: pure Talalay latex from top to bottom, quilted on both sides, completely reversible, and built by hand in our own shop, usually one a day. Factory direct, with no middlemen, and a 20‑year written warranty.

It begins with a tree

Natural latex is the milky sap of the Hevea brasiliensis tree. Like maple syrup, it is tapped from the mature tree, which goes on producing for decades. The tree is native to the Amazon rainforest, where the Olmecs first made rubber, and the Maya later used it for the balls of their ancient ballgames. Seeds left Brazil in the late 1800s to start the plantations that supply the world today.

Latex is naturally buoyant. Instead of letting you sink, as memory foam does, it pushes gently back, so your hips and shoulders are cradled while your spine stays level. Its open cells breathe, so it sleeps cool, and it lasts far longer than petroleum foams.

The eight‑step Talalay process

Developed by the Talalay family and patented in 1955, the Talalay process takes about four times longer than ordinary Dunlop latex. The two extra steps, vacuum and flash freezing, are what give Talalay its even, buoyant feel.

  1. Whip

Liquid latex is whipped into a froth, like a soufflé.

  2. Pour

The froth fills only part of an aluminum pin‑core mold.

  3. Vacuum

A vacuum expands the latex to fill every corner evenly.

  4. Flash freeze

The mold is frozen to about −20°F so the cells stay perfectly uniform.

  5. Gel

Carbon dioxide is drawn through the open cells to set the foam.

  6. Cure

The mold is heated to vulcanize the latex into lasting rubber.

  7. Wash

Each core is washed to remove residues from production.

  8. Dry and test

Cores are dried, then rated for firmness before they reach us.

Watch how Talalay latex is made

The pin holes you see in a Talalay core come from the mold's pins, which carry heat and cold through the latex during freezing and curing.

Talalay comes in all‑natural and blended formulas. We will show you the difference side by side and help you choose. If certified organic matters most to you, see our GOLS‑certified organic Dunlop latex below.
